Top Reliable Used Cars as Sales Soar: Ford Fiesta Leads the Pack
As the demand for second-hand vehicles continues to rise, new research has shed light on which used cars are the most reliable in the market. According to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the UK saw a 6.5% growth in the used car market in the first quarter of the year, reaching almost two million units sold. This marks the best first quarter since 2019, with sales of second-hand zero emission vehicles increasing by a staggering 71%, capturing a market share of 2.1%.
One of the standout findings from the research is that the Ford Fiesta, the best-selling used car in the UK, is also the most reliable among the most popular vehicles on the second-hand market. Despite being discontinued, the Ford Fiesta remains a top choice for many buyers, with over 80,000 models changing hands in the first quarter of the year.
According to Warrantywise, the Ford Fiesta scored an impressive 70 out of 100 on the Reliability Index, making it the most reliable used car on the best-selling list. With a low average repair cost of just £925 and an average repair lifespan of eight years, the Fiesta proves to be a durable and cost-effective option for used car buyers.
Lawrence Whittaker, CEO of Warrantywise, expressed his delight at seeing the Ford Fiesta top yet another chart, highlighting its longstanding popularity and reliability among used car buyers. He emphasized the importance of protecting used cars with a warranty, especially those sold at independent dealerships or outside manufacturer warranty coverage, to avoid unexpected repair bills.
In addition to the Ford Fiesta, other popular used cars sold in the first quarter of 2024 include the Vauxhall Corsa, Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf, Vauxhall Astra, BMW 3 Series, Volkswagen Polo, Nissan Qashqai, and Audi A3. Each of these models has its own Reliability Index score, reflecting their performance and durability in the used car market.
