Concerns raised over surge in uninsured young drivers and soaring insurance premiums
Are you a young driver struggling with the skyrocketing costs of car insurance premiums? You’re not alone. IAM RoadSmart’s director of policy and standards, Nicholas Lyes, has expressed deep concern over the surge in young drivers breaking the law due to the financial burden of insurance. With costs rising by 34% in the past year alone, it’s no wonder that many young motorists are taking to the roads uninsured.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has been criticized for their role in this crisis, with their head of insurance policy, Jonathan Fong, acknowledging the disproportionate impact on younger drivers. The average payout for drivers aged 17-20 is a staggering 74% higher than for those aged 46-50, reflecting the higher risk associated with younger drivers.
In response to these challenges, IAM RoadSmart is calling for government intervention. They are advocating for the removal of insurance premium tax for drivers under 25, as well as supporting the new Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) (New Drivers) Bill. This bill would introduce a ‘Graduated Drivers Licence’ scheme aimed at improving road safety and creating better drivers for the future.
