Bugatti Affirms Commitment to Petrol Cars Despite UK Regulations

The luxury car brand Bugatti has made headlines recently by announcing that they have no plans to switch their fleet to electric vehicles as petrol and diesel cars are phased out across the UK. Despite the potential for harsh fines, Bugatti’s top executive remains steadfast in their commitment to continue building petrol cars.

Mate Rimac, the boss of Bugatti’s parent company Rimac, even suggested the possibility of building synthetic fuel stations for drivers to use at home if petrol and diesel cars are no longer in use. This bold stance was reiterated at a recent car summit in London, where Rimac reassured drivers that petrol engines would be “here to stay.”

While other car brands have pledged their support to the net zero mandate, Bugatti seems unconcerned with the fines they may face for not complying with UK regulations. Rimac pointed out that the headlines may suggest combustion engine cars will be banned by 2035, but the fine print allows for continued production with potential penalties.

Despite the luxury brand’s confidence in their decision, the UK Government’s goal of banning the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2035 is still a pressing issue. Carmakers will need to have at least 22% of all new cars be electric by the end of this year to meet the mandate.

In the midst of this transition, drivers in the UK have a wide range of electric vehicles to choose from, with over 100 models currently available on the market. The Chief Executive of the SMMT, Mike Hawes, emphasized the industry’s progress in driving down emissions and providing consumers with more electric car options.

Bugatti’s decision to continue selling petrol cars beyond 2035 may be controversial, but it highlights the ongoing debate surrounding the future of transportation. As the automotive industry navigates the shift towards electric vehicles, it will be interesting to see how different brands adapt to meet the changing regulations and consumer preferences.
