The upcoming July 4 General Election in the UK is heating up with each party unveiling their key policies and promises. One of the most controversial announcements came from the Tories, with Rishi Sunak proposing a form of national service for eighteen year olds if they are voted back into power. This would give young people the choice between a full-time placement in the armed forces for 12 months or volunteering in their community one weekend a month for a year.

The prime minister believes that this policy would help unite society in an increasingly uncertain world and give young people a shared sense of purpose. However, this announcement has sparked debate and divided opinions among the public.

On the other hand, the Liberal Democrats are focusing their campaign on saving the NHS, with Sir Ed Davey launching their battlebus campaign in a marginal blue-wall seat. The party has pledged to introduce a 10-year rolling repair programme for the NHS estate, highlighting the neglect and deterioration of healthcare facilities under the Tories.

Meanwhile, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has expressed his support for lowering the voting age to 16 and 17-year-olds, arguing that if young people can work, pay tax, and serve in the armed forces, they should have the right to vote. This move aims to give young people a voice in shaping the future of the country.

However, amidst the political campaigns and promises, tragic incidents have also occurred, such as the stabbing death of a 16-year-old boy in west London and the fatal crash of a Royal Air Force pilot in Lincolnshire. These events serve as a reminder of the challenges and tragedies that can happen in our society.

As the G7 finance officials work towards an agreement on squeezing more money for Ukraine from Russian assets frozen in their countries, the weather forecast also predicts heavy downpours moving northwards across the UK. Despite the political turmoil and unpredictable weather, the country continues to navigate through these challenges with resilience and determination.

The upcoming July 4 General Election will be a crucial moment for the UK, shaping the future direction of the country. It is important for voters to carefully consider the policies and promises put forward by each party and make an informed decision at the polls. The outcome of the election will have a significant impact on the lives of all citizens, especially the younger generation who will be directly affected by the proposed national service and voting age changes.
