The Rise of Earthy, Muted Car Colors: A Trend Among Car Buyers

Are you tired of the same old shiny, metallic car colors that seem to dominate the roads? Well, you’re not alone. According to the LA Times, there’s a new trend in town, and it’s all about earthy, muted shades that are taking the car industry by storm.

Gone are the days of flashy, shimmering cars that blind you in the sunlight. Now, car buyers are opting for more subdued hues like gray, black, brown, tan, and green. Brands like Jaguar, Rivian, and Jeep have all jumped on the bandwagon, offering matte palettes that are a far cry from the traditional metallic paints we’re used to.

The trend first emerged in 2013 when Audi introduced its popular Nardo Gray hue, but it has since gained momentum, with carmakers expanding their color schemes to include nature-inspired shades like “Red Canyon” and “Glacier White.” Rivian even launched an “Earth Tones” palette in February 2022, catering to the growing demand for these muted colors.

According to Kelley Blue Book, matte finishes give cars a more understated, “stealthy” look that sets them apart from the crowd. However, these trendy shades come at a price, with upcharges ranging from $400 to $10,000 for select models.

But why are consumers gravitating towards these earthy tones? Some experts believe it’s a reflection of a broader shift towards eco-friendly living and sustainability. Leatrice Eiseman of the Pantone Color Institute suggests that the trend is a response to environmental concerns, with consumers seeking out colors that feel more authentic and natural.

Whether it’s a personal expression of style or a nod to sustainability, one thing is clear – muted car colors are here to stay. From Hyundai’s Santa Cruz model outselling traditional hues to TikTok users sharing videos of their matte cars, the trend shows no signs of slowing down.

So, if you’re in the market for a new ride, why not consider stepping away from the shiny norm and opting for a more subdued, earthy shade? After all, as automotive color design expert Paul Czornij puts it, your car is a reflection of who you are – so why not make a statement with a matte finish that speaks volumes about your personality?
