The End of an Era: Geneva Motor Show Bids Farewell After 119 Years
The end of an era has come for the Geneva Motor Show, a staple in the automotive world for over a century. The last edition of the show took place on 3 March 2024, marking the end of an era that began 119 years ago. The decision to end the show was made due to uncertainties in the automotive industry and a decline in the attractiveness of European motor shows.
With only 29 exhibitors participating in the final edition, major car manufacturers like Volkswagen Group, Stellantis, Mercedes, BMW, and Hyundai were notably absent. The European old guard was represented by Renault, showcasing their electric Renault 5 and the new Dacia Spring. The absence of key players in the industry was a clear sign of the changing times.
Despite hopes of a possible return in 2026, the press release announcing the end of the show put a definitive end to any speculation. The Foundation Council of the Geneva International Motor Show will formally request authorization to dissolve the foundation, signaling the end of an era.
However, the show will continue in a new form in Qatar, where the first edition was held in November last year. The future of the GIMS will now be in Qatar, with the second edition scheduled for November 2025. This new chapter in the history of the show will be an interesting one, as it moves to a country with no car-related traditions, except for the oil industry.
As we bid farewell to the Geneva Motor Show, we look forward to seeing what the future holds for the automotive industry in Qatar. The end of one chapter marks the beginning of a new one, and we can’t wait to see what innovations and developments lie ahead in the world of cars.
