Aviva Warns of Rising Summer Flood Risks: How to Protect Your Property

As we bask in the warm summer sun, it’s easy to forget about the potential risks that come with the season. However, Aviva’s latest analysis serves as a stark reminder that summer isn’t all sunshine and rainbows – in fact, it can bring unexpected deluges that pose a significant threat to our homes and businesses.

The data reveals a concerning trend: a staggering 35 percent of home insurance flood claims are lodged between June and August, with July and August being particularly perilous months. This shift in flood occurrence from the traditional winter months to the warmer seasons is a cause for concern, as it catches many off guard and unprepared.

Jason Storah, CEO of Aviva UK & Ireland General Insurance, issues a warning about the increasing risk of summer flash floods across the nation. He emphasizes the need for constant vigilance and preparedness, urging residents and businesses to put in place a flood action plan to protect their properties.

Storah offers practical advice for property protection, such as moving sentimental items to higher levels, installing flood gates, and opting for absorbent materials like gravel or block paving. These small changes can make a big difference in mitigating flood risks and protecting your property from water damage.

The warning comes at a crucial time, as a recent survey revealed that many homeowners are replacing parts of their gardens with impermeable driveways, exacerbating flood risks. Aviva stresses the importance of climate-ready properties, regardless of where we live or work, to combat the changing weather patterns and extreme events like flash flooding.

In light of this information, it’s essential for homeowners and businesses to take proactive steps to bolster their flood defenses. From checking property drains to incorporating permeable materials into outdoor spaces, there are various measures we can take to reduce the impact of summer floods on our properties.

So, as we enjoy the summer months ahead, let’s not forget to stay vigilant and prepared for the unexpected. By following Aviva’s savvy advice and taking proactive steps to protect our properties, we can ensure that we’re ready to face whatever challenges the summer deluge may bring.
