McLaren CEO Announces Plans for SUV and All-Electric Hypercar
Are you a fan of McLaren supercars? Well, get ready for something different because McLaren’s boss is shaking things up with some exciting new developments. In a recent interview with Road & Track, CEO Michael Leiters revealed that the British automaker is finally planning to release an SUV. But that’s not all – they’re also working on an all-electric hypercar.
Leiters, who took on his role in 2022, emphasized that McLaren is first and foremost a supercar maker. However, after facing significant financial losses, the company is ready to expand its lineup. This expansion includes the long-awaited SUV, which will offer a new level of performance to a wider audience.
But the most intriguing news is the development of a “shared performance vehicle” (SPV), which will be a collaboration with another automaker. While details are scarce, Leiters hinted that the SPV will feature a hybrid powertrain and a price point similar to luxury SUVs like the Rolls-Royce Cullinan or Ferrari Purosangue.
In addition to the SPV, McLaren is also working on an all-electric supercar that will set the standard for the future of the class. Leiters stressed the importance of keeping the EV’s weight similar to the Artura to maintain its supercar status. Despite these new projects, McLaren remains committed to producing vehicles with combustion engines for the time being.
While there is no set timetable for these new vehicles, it’s clear that McLaren fans have a lot to look forward to. With the company now fully owned by Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund, Mumtalakat, the future looks bright for this iconic automaker.
