Analysis of New-Car Market Performance in France, Italy, and Spain in May 2024

The month of May brought some unexpected challenges to the new-car markets of France, Italy, and Spain. As we delve into the intricacies of each market, it becomes clear that the performance of different powertrains played a significant role in shaping the outcomes.

In France, the new-car market experienced a decline in May, with hybrids emerging as the saving grace. Both full hybrid (HEV) and mild hybrid (MHEV) powertrains saw growth, with HEVs leading the way in terms of volume and market share. Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) also recorded positive results, showcasing an improvement in market share compared to the previous year. However, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) struggled, pulling down the overall electric vehicle (EV) market.

Moving on to Italy, the market faced a similar decline in May, with diesel registrations taking a significant hit. Petrol-powered cars saw a slight increase in deliveries, but the overall ICE market experienced a decline. BEVs and PHEVs continued to struggle in Italy, with EV registrations falling year on year. The introduction of a new incentive scheme in June aims to reverse this trend and boost the adoption of low and zero-emission vehicles.

In Spain, the new-car market managed to grow in May, thanks to the strong performance of hybrids. However, concerns were raised over the slow uptake of EVs, with both BEVs and PHEVs experiencing declines. ANFAC emphasized the need for a renewal of subsidies and a faster expansion of charging infrastructure to drive the country’s EV market forward.

Overall, the month of May highlighted the importance of a diverse range of powertrains in the new-car market. While some powertrains thrived, others faced challenges, underscoring the need for continued innovation and support to drive the transition towards greener technologies. As we navigate through the complexities of the automotive industry, it is clear that the future lies in a balanced mix of powertrains to meet the evolving needs of consumers and the environment.
