NFDA Calls for Action to Boost Electric Vehicle Market
The electric vehicle market is at a critical juncture, with fleet demand soaring while private consumer adoption remains stagnant. The National Franchised Dealer Association (NFDA) is calling for urgent action to incentivize take-up, address myths and misinformation, and drive charge point installations to propel the industry forward.
According to the NFDA, price incentives for electric vehicles would be a key factor in persuading consumers to make the shift to electric. A recent Consumer Attitude Survey found that 62% of UK driving license holders cited price as the main barrier to purchasing an electric vehicle. The association is advocating for upfront price incentives to help increase EV uptake and transition the market from early adopters to the mainstream.
In addition to price incentives, the NFDA is calling for policy measures such as harmonizing VAT on public and private EV charging, extending Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) exemptions for battery electric vehicles, and setting annual public charge point targets. The association also highlights the need to address regional disparities in charge point infrastructure, with Northern Ireland lagging behind other regions.
The NFDA’s manifesto outlines seven key ‘asks’ for the next government, including overhauling the apprenticeship levy, outlining a clear plan for future road pricing, removing unfair regulations for electric vans, increasing HGV MOT capacity, and reducing business rates. Chief executive Sue Robinson emphasizes the importance of government support in navigating the industry’s transition towards electrification and addressing core challenges like the skills shortage.
As the UK moves towards the electrification of its vehicle fleet, collaboration between the government and the automotive sector will be crucial in driving progress and ensuring a sustainable future for electric vehicles. The NFDA’s call to action highlights the need for proactive measures to stimulate consumer demand, dispel misinformation, and enhance infrastructure to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles.
