Rolls-Royce Introduces Hybrid Drive Concept for Armoured Military Land Vehicles
Rolls-Royce Power Systems is revolutionizing the future of military land vehicles with their innovative hybrid drive concept based around the company’s mtu diesel engines. This cutting-edge technology will allow vehicles to operate in an ‘anti-idling’ all-electric mode when stationary, reducing noise and fuel consumption while delivering power silently.
The hybrid drive concept will see high-performance batteries charged when the engine is running on diesel power, providing significant tactical benefits for military operations. Tanks will be able to travel with reduced noise at slow speeds, thanks to a customized silencer, and tap into electrical power for increased acceleration and top-end speed when needed, such as in combat situations.
According to Knut Müller, senior vice president of Global Governmental Business at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, this hybrid drive concept will allow for the utilization of hybridization in all operating modes, meeting the increased power demands of future armoured military land vehicles while also considering a different tactical approach in the field.
Rolls-Royce has a long history of producing reliable mtu Series 199 engines, with 6- and 8-cylinder variants powering NATO military vehicles. The company has also announced a new 10-cylinder mtu variant with a max output of 1,100kW, further expanding their range of propulsion solutions for military applications.
Christian Wolf, head of Development for Military Engines and Systems at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, believes that this hybrid propulsion concept will open up new operational possibilities for future tracked armoured vehicles, making an important contribution to the defense capabilities of NATO and its allies.
