UK New Car Market Hits Half a Million Milestone for the First Time in Five Years
The UK new car market has hit a significant milestone, reaching half a million new car registrations in the first half of the year for the first time in five years. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), new car registrations in June increased by 1.1% to reach 179,263 units, bringing the total number of new cars registered so far in 2024 to over 1 million, up 6.0% from the previous year.
One of the key drivers of this growth has been the fleet sector, which saw a 14.2% increase in uptake. However, private retail demand has continued to decline for the ninth consecutive month, falling by -15.3%. Despite this, electrified vehicle uptake has been on the rise, with plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) both seeing significant increases in market share.
The transition to zero emission vehicles is crucial for the UK’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions, and the automotive industry is calling on the government to provide support to consumers to accelerate this transition. One proposal is to reinstate fiscal incentives for private consumers, such as halving VAT on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for three years. This could potentially put an additional 300,000 private BEVs on the road over the next three years, helping to achieve the goal of having half of all cars in use be zero emission by 2035.
The SMMT also suggests revising Vehicle Excise Duty plans to classify zero emission vehicles as essential rather than luxury vehicles, and reducing VAT on public charge point use to encourage more consumers to switch to zero emission vehicles.
Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of SMMT, emphasized the importance of the government implementing the right policies to re-energize the market and facilitate a faster transition to zero emission vehicles. With all parties agreeing on the need to cut carbon emissions, transitioning to electrified powertrains is seen as the essential step to achieving this goal.
Overall, the UK new car market is showing positive signs of growth, but there are challenges ahead that require government support and industry collaboration to overcome. The transition to zero emission vehicles is not only necessary for reducing carbon emissions but also for ensuring a sustainable future for the automotive industry.
