Porsche 911 outsells Taycan in 2022 as component shortages impact EV production
The year 2022 was a rollercoaster for Porsche, with the iconic 911 reclaiming its throne as the brand’s top-selling model, surpassing the Taycan electric vehicle. This reversal of fortune was largely attributed to supply chain bottlenecks and limited component availability that hampered the production of the cutting-edge Taycan.
Despite these challenges, Porsche managed to deliver a total of 309,884 new cars in 2022, marking a three per cent improvement from the previous year. The success of the brand’s SUV lineup, including the Cayenne and Macan, played a significant role in driving overall sales.
China remained Porsche’s largest market, with 93,286 cars sold in the country, despite a two per cent decline due to various challenges brought about by the global pandemic. North America saw consistent sales, while European deliveries experienced a seven per cent increase.
In the UK, Porsche continued to hold a strong presence, with 18,267 new registrations in 2022. Notably, 40 per cent of these were electric Taycans or plug-in hybrid versions of other models, reflecting the growing demand for sustainable mobility solutions.
Detlev von Platen, board member for sales and marketing at Porsche AG, acknowledged the numerous challenges faced by the brand throughout the year but expressed pride in the team’s ability to overcome them and fulfill the dreams of more customers than ever before.
As Porsche navigates the ever-changing automotive landscape, one thing remains clear – the passion for driving excellence and innovation continues to drive the brand forward, ensuring that the legacy of iconic models like the 911 and the cutting-edge technology of the Taycan will continue to captivate enthusiasts around the world.
