BMW 520d (G30) Running Costs: Despite High Expenses, BMW Remains Popular Among Owners
Are BMW cars really worth the high running costs? According to recent research, BMW drivers in the UK spend an average of £2,411 on running costs every year, making them the most expensive cars to run in the country. Despite this hefty price tag, BMW cars remain incredibly popular among a loyal customer base who believe that the luxury, reliability, and engineering prowess of these German-engineered vehicles are worth every penny.
One interesting finding from the study is that BMW drivers actually use their cars the least, making just 292 journeys on average per year. This means that every time a BMW is driven, it costs an average of £8.26 – a whopping 59% more than the cost-per-use for a Citroen. Despite this, BMW owners continue to stand by their choice of vehicle, showcasing the brand’s enduring appeal and reputation for excellence.
In comparison, Toyotas come in as the second most expensive cars to run, costing owners around £2,085 annually. Volkswagens take the third spot, with an average annual cost of £1,900. Peugeot, Citroen, Ford, and Vauxhall owners enjoy lower running costs in comparison.
Fuel is the biggest expense for car owners, accounting for an average of £1,124 per year. Insurance, road tax, routine maintenance, and cleaning make up the rest of the annual expenditure.
Interestingly, the research also found that Londoners spend the most on their cars annually, shelling out about £2,771 – over £1,000 more than those in Scotland. This highlights the regional disparities in running costs and the impact of location on the overall cost of car ownership.
Despite the high running costs associated with BMW cars, their popularity and reputation for excellence continue to attract a dedicated following. For many BMW owners, the luxury, performance, and prestige of driving a BMW outweigh the financial investment required to keep these vehicles on the road. So, if you’re considering investing in a BMW, remember that while the running costs may be high, the driving experience and status symbol that comes with owning a BMW are often considered well worth it.
