SSE Opens First Ultra-Rapid EV Charging Hub in Ireland, Minister Peter Burke TD Officiates

The future of transportation is electric, and Ireland is taking big steps towards a greener future with the opening of SSE’s first ultra-rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging hub in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. This state-of-the-art facility features 10 charging bays capable of delivering up to 150 kilowatts per bay, making it one of the most powerful charging hubs in the country.

What sets this hub apart is its accommodation for electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs), with four drive-through bays specifically designed for these larger vehicles. This makes it the first facility of its kind in Ireland, catering to the needs of a wide range of EV users.

Convenience is key when it comes to EV charging, and the Mullingar hub offers Tap’n’Go payment options and integrates with SSE’s roaming payment partner Octopus Electroverse. This seamless payment process aims to provide users with easy access to fast and reliable charging services.

SSE’s commitment to supporting Ireland’s growing demand for EV infrastructure is evident in their plan to construct 300 ultra-rapid EV charging hubs across the UK and Ireland over the next five years. This initiative aligns with the government’s National EV Charging Infrastructure Strategy and draft National En-Route EV Charging Plan, highlighting the importance of private investment in meeting Ireland’s climate targets.

Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Peter Burke TD emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting and incentivizing the use of EVs to reduce transport emissions and meet climate targets. Private investments like SSE’s ultra-rapid charging hubs play a crucial role in expanding the EV charging network at the pace and scale required to achieve Ireland’s ambitious goals.

SSE’s partnership with TotalEnergies under the brand ‘Source’ further solidifies their commitment to becoming a major player in EV charging infrastructure in the UK and Ireland. With plans to deploy up to 3000 ultra-rapid charge points over the next five years, the future of EV charging in Ireland looks bright.

Stay tuned for more updates on SSE’s upcoming charging hubs in Blanchardstown Business Park, Greenogue Industrial Estate, and Ashbourne Retail Park. The shift towards electric transportation is well underway, and SSE is leading the charge towards a cleaner, greener future for Ireland.
