Ford Fiesta Tops List of Most Popular Second Hand Cars in 2023

According to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the Ford Fiesta topped the list of the most popular second-hand cars in 2023, with a whopping 235,611 units sold. In fact, Ford Fiestas represented more than 16% of all used cars sold in the UK this year when you total the sales of the top 10 most popular models. The Ford Focus also made the list, coming in at number four.

But Ford wasn’t the only brand making waves in the used car market. Volkswagen had two vehicles in the top 10 – the Golf and the Polo models were both popular choices among buyers.

Overall, up to Q3 of 2023, there were almost 1.9 million used cars sold across the first three quarters of the year. And the market saw a strong performance in September, with a 6.3% increase in sales compared to the previous month.

One interesting trend to note is the rise in demand for electric vehicles. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) saw a 99.9% increase in sales in the quarter, reaching a record market share. This shift reflects the government’s policy incentives to transition from petrol to electric vehicles.

Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and hybrids (HEVs) also saw growth, with combined plug-ins increasing by 70.9% to comprise 2.8% of the market. Meanwhile, sales of petrol and diesel cars also saw modest increases.
