Report: UK’s Competitiveness Key to Delivering Over a Million Zero Emission Vehicles by 2035
The UK automotive industry is on the brink of a major transformation, with the potential to deliver over a million British-built zero emission vehicles every year by 2035. The latest Sustainability Report from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) highlights the significant progress made in reducing carbon emissions and improving sustainability within the sector.
One of the key findings of the report is that direct carbon emissions from vehicle factories have halved over the past 25 years, making the UK an ideal location for producing the next generation of zero-emission vehicles. This achievement has been the result of substantial industry investment and a commitment to reducing environmental impact.
In addition to reducing carbon emissions, UK manufacturers have also made strides in reducing energy and water usage per vehicle, further contributing to the industry’s sustainability efforts. Record volumes of electrified vehicles are now leaving factory lines, with output increasing by almost half in 2023.
The report emphasizes the importance of collaboration and investment in making the UK more globally competitive in the production of zero emission vehicles. Key considerations include the need to support a mass market for ZEVs in the UK, as manufacturers tend to locate close to where their products are sold.
The SMMT has outlined seven measures to make sustainability a competitive advantage in the UK, including the development of a green automotive transformation strategy, fiscal and regulatory support measures, and the empowerment of a sustainable supply chain and workforce. These measures aim to position the UK as a leader in sustainability and attract investment in zero emission technologies.
Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, highlights the importance of the automotive sector in driving the nation towards net zero emissions. He calls for collaboration with the new government to deliver a green growth agenda that puts Britain at the forefront of global investment and sustainability leadership.
As the UK automotive industry continues to make strides towards sustainability, the potential for over a million zero emission vehicles to be produced annually by 2035 is within reach. With the right investment conditions and support from the government, the UK could become a global leader in the production of zero emission vehicles, driving economic growth, improving air quality, and creating new jobs and skills for people across the country.
