Eyewitness Report: Lebanon Prepares for All-Out War Amid Gaza Ceasefire Talks
The tension in Lebanon is palpable as the country prepares for the possibility of all-out war amidst ongoing ceasefire talks in Gaza. The recent assassinations of key Hamas and Hezbollah leaders have only heightened fears and suspicions, with Iran and Hezbollah pointing fingers at Israel for the attacks.
As a special correspondent in Beirut, I had the opportunity to witness firsthand the preparations being made by the Lebanese government and healthcare system in anticipation of a major emergency. The Lebanese health minister, Firas Abiad, took us on a tour of hospitals to see their disaster plans and readiness to receive patients and casualties in the event of a conflict.
Despite facing numerous challenges such as the economic collapse, the coronavirus pandemic, and the devastating explosion at Beirut Port, Lebanon has been working tirelessly to strengthen its health infrastructure and stockpile essential medicines in case of a sea and air blockade. The country is bracing itself for potential Israeli attacks and the cycle of violence that may follow.
The fear and uncertainty among the Lebanese people are palpable, with many families retreating to mountain areas they perceive as safer and embassies warning their citizens to leave or avoid traveling to Lebanon. Water supply shops are reporting increased sales as residents stockpile essentials, but for the poor who live day to day, the prospect of war is especially daunting.
As the situation in the region remains tense, the resilience and preparedness of the Lebanese people and healthcare workers are truly commendable. The hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah remains uncertain, but the determination to protect and care for the population in the face of adversity is unwavering.
