BMW’s Proposal for Transition to Electric Vehicles: Dedicated Lanes and Free Parking

In an interview with Munchner Merkur, Milan Nedeljkovic, BMW board member responsible for production, suggested the creation of dedicated electric vehicle lanes on motorways and free parking spaces for battery-powered models. This proposal aims to not only incentivize the adoption of electric vehicles but also improve the overall image of these models.
The idea of dedicated lanes for electric vehicles is particularly intriguing. Nedeljkovic believes that if people see electric cars overtaking them in traffic on a regular basis, they may be more inclined to consider making the switch themselves. Nedeljkovic also expressed concerns about the EU’s plans to calculate the CO2 footprint of battery production based on the country’s overall energy mix. This approach could penalize companies like BMW that are investing in green energy, as their CO2 footprint would be calculated based on the energy mix of the country where they are located. This could discourage companies from producing in the most climate-sustainable way possible.
Despite these challenges, BMW has continued to invest in its German factories, with €5 billion being invested over the past five years. However, Nedeljkovic warned that local competition is becoming increasingly difficult due to factors such as bureaucracy, energy costs, and high operating costs.
