UK Car Production Soars in 2023, Reaching Highest Growth Rate Since 2010
The UK car production industry is booming, with numbers hitting a record high in 2023. According to new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), production numbers in the UK reached one million vehicles for the first time since the pandemic, with a total of 1,025,474 cars and commercial vehicles built, marking a 17% increase from the previous year.
One of the key drivers of this growth was the surge in production of battery electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid vehicles, which saw a 48% increase from the year before. This shift towards electrified models, combined with the easing of pandemic-related challenges such as chip shortages and lockdowns, played a significant role in driving annual output.
Overall, UK car production rose by 16.8% in 2023, marking its best growth rate since 2010. The total retail value of all models made exceeded £50bn, highlighting the economic impact of the industry. The majority of vehicles produced in the UK are exported, with the European Union being the largest market, accounting for 60.3% of exports.
The top British exports included popular models such as the Nissan Qashqai, Mini, and Toyota Corolla. Luxury models from brands like Range Rover also dominated the export list, showcasing the global appeal of British-made cars.
Looking ahead, the SMMT forecasts a slight increase in UK car output for the upcoming year, with a potential to exceed 1.2 million units by the end of the decade. The industry is focused on transitioning to electric vehicles and scaling up the supply chain to meet growing demand.
With new model introductions, massive investments, and a positive outlook for the future, the UK car production industry is on track for continued success. Watch this space for more exciting developments in the world of British automotive manufacturing.
